Summary

A modification of the Livingstone piston sampler is described. The sampler employs the piston feature of the Livingstone device in conjunction with the rod and locking mechanism of the Davis borer. The sampler is used in different ways for loose and compact sedi-ments. Advantages over the Livingtone sampler are: (1) reduced cost, (2) no distortion of the uppermost part of the sample, ( 3) no danger of the piston rising prematurely in the sample tube, and ( 4) the design per-mits the use of a falling weight to force the sampler into a hard sediment. The main dis ad vantage is that two wire lines are necessary instead of the single line of the Livingstone sampler.
